A tribute to our co-founder
Ken van Sweeden
The Liability Company started its journey back in 2019 as Liability Matters. The business was founded by serial entrepreneur, Allen McDonogh and Ken van Sweeden, a well known liability specialist and entrepreneur in the insurance industry. Ken had a vision to build a business that supported businesses and professionals in South Africa with traditional, dependable values. Tragically Ken passed away in 2021 during the pandemic. The business was kept on course by Debbie Fleisher who is still our underwriting director today. We have retained "Liability Matters" in our new branding to pay tribute to Ken, and to underline that we do what we do, because liability really does matter.

We continue to be driven by a commitment to augmenting the intrinsic value of brokers' roles in the insurance industry.
Underwriting Managers are mandated by licensed short term insurers to transact specialist business on their behalf. In our case, our trusted risk carriers are both within the Old Mutual Group and are Old Mutual Insure Limited and Old Mutual Alternative Risk Transfer Insure Limited. Every policy we issue is underwritten by these short term insurers on a 60/40 basis, respectively.
