The Liability Company and Old Mutual Insure Strengthen Their Strategic Partnership

We are delighted to announce an important milestone in the journey of The Liability Company (TLC).

Effective 1 July 2026, TLC’s specialist liability portfolio will be placed 100% with Old Mutual Insure (OMI), marking the next phase in a partnership that has evolved over several years.

This is far more than a change in insurance capacity. It represents a shared commitment to investing in specialist liability underwriting and building one of South Africa’s leading specialist liability platforms—combining TLC’s technical underwriting expertise, entrepreneurial culture and broker relationships with the financial strength, underwriting capability and long-term commitment of Old Mutual Insure.

As our business has continued to grow and evolve, we recognised the importance of partnering with an insurer that shared our long-term vision for specialist liability. The move to a single-carrier model provides the scale, alignment and stability required to support the next phase of TLC’s growth while continuing to deliver exceptional service to our broker partners.

What this means for brokers

For our brokers and their clients, this partnership delivers a stronger and more streamlined underwriting platform while preserving everything that has made TLC successful.

The new arrangement provides:

  • Broader policy cover across key liability products.
  • Enhanced underwriting limits in several important areas.
  • Increased underwriting capacity for complex liability risks.
  • Continued access to TLC’s specialist underwriting team.
  • Faster decision-making and technical support.
  • Continued investment in product development, technology and broker service.

Most importantly, our people, our underwriting philosophy and our commitment to brokers remain unchanged.

The same team, the same specialist expertise and the same entrepreneurial approach will continue to underpin every interaction with our broker partners.

Recognising our journey

No business reaches this point alone.

As we begin this exciting new chapter, we also want to acknowledge the important role played by Old Mutual Alternative Risk Transfer Insure Limited (OMARTi).

Since partnering with TLC in 2019, OMARTi has been instrumental in helping us establish and grow our specialist liability business. Their support, technical expertise and willingness to back our vision provided the foundation upon which TLC has been built.

We are sincerely grateful to the entire OMARTi team for the trust, partnership and support they have shown us over the past six years, and we look forward to continuing to work closely together during the orderly run-off of the existing portfolio.

A shared vision

Commenting on the announcement, Simon Colman, Chief Executive Officer of The Liability Company, said:

“This marks an exciting new chapter for The Liability Company, but it is also an opportunity to reflect on the journey that has brought us here.

We are incredibly grateful to the team at Old Mutual Alternative Risk Transfer Insure, who believed in our vision from an early stage and played an integral role in helping us establish TLC as a recognised specialist liability underwriting business.

As we looked to the future, we wanted a long-term insurance partner that shared our ambition to continue investing in specialist liability underwriting.

This isn’t simply about placing our portfolio with a single insurer. It’s about creating the scale, stability and long-term alignment needed to continue building South Africa’s leading specialist liability platform. We believe Old Mutual Insure shares that vision, and we’re excited about what this partnership will enable us to achieve for brokers and their clients.”

Commenting on the strengthened partnership, Samantha Boyd, CE: Specialty at Old Mutual Insure, said:

“The Liability Company has established itself as one of South Africa’s leading specialist liability underwriting businesses through its technical expertise, strong broker relationships and entrepreneurial approach to underwriting.

We are excited to deepen our relationship with TLC and to support the next phase of its growth. Together, we are creating a platform that combines specialist liability expertise with OMI’s financial strength, underwriting capacity and long-term commitment to the market, delivering greater value for brokers and their clients.

We believe this partnership creates an outstanding foundation for continued innovation, sustainable growth and long-term success within the specialist liability market.”

Looking Ahead

The transition to a 100% Old Mutual Insure binder represents much more than an operational change.

It reflects the coming together of two organisations that share a common belief in the future of specialist liability insurance in South Africa.

Together, TLC and Old Mutual Insure are investing in underwriting excellence, innovative liability solutions and enduring broker partnerships. By combining entrepreneurial specialist expertise with the strength and scale of one of South Africa’s leading insurers, we are creating a platform that is purpose-built to support brokers and their clients as liability risks continue to evolve.

This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter—one built on partnership, shared ambition and a commitment to helping brokers protect South African businesses with confidence.
